Civil Engineer Jobs in Canada Position Summary
As a Civil Engineer, you will report to the Senior Civil Engineer and be based at the Back River Project site in Nunavut on a 3×3 FIFO schedule. You will lead the design, coordination, and inspection of civil works, including roadways, pads, drainage, and other mine-site infrastructure. This hands-on role plays a critical part in ensuring safety, quality, cost control, and timely delivery of engineering works in a challenging but rewarding permafrost environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft and design civil infrastructure including roads, culverts, drainage, site grading, and storage pads.
- Manage project scheduling, crew assignments, and equipment logistics across ongoing civil works.
- Monitor and report on project costs; track variances against budgets and timelines.
- Coordinate third-party geotechnical and concrete testing; analyze and ensure compliance with QA/QC protocols.
- Conduct on-site inspections to monitor progress and adherence to safety and engineering standards.
- Support the preparation of technical drawings and 3D civil models for internal review and execution.
- Lead procurement planning for construction materials and site inventory; ensure timely delivery to site.
- Collaborate with consultants and vendors to review proposals and recommend selections.
- Identify project risks, constraints, and opportunities for efficiency improvement.
- Assist in traffic management planning, including temporary routing during construction phases.
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure alignment with regulatory and corporate standards.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (B.Eng).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in civil engineering, ideally related to mining or industrial infrastructure.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation or ability to register with NAPEG (Northwest Territories & Nunavut).
- Knowledge of permafrost construction methods is a strong asset.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam PDF, MS Excel, and MS Project.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills; capable of working in remote environments.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Experience in working with Indigenous communities or remote project locations is an advantage.
